Waseca Hockey awarded grant to support young players
Thu, 09/11/2025 - 12:30am
The Waseca Hockey Association is proud to announce it has been awarded a grant from the Minnesota Wild Foundation's Skate It Forward initiative. In this inaugural year of the program, the grant will cover the first-year registration fees for all new Waseca Hockey players ages 8 and under.
The Minnesota Wild Foundation launched Skate It Forward with a clear purpose: to grow community hockey participation in Minnesota by making it easier for first-time players to get on the ice. The long-term goal of the initiative is to one day make the first year of ice time free for every young hockey player in Minnesota.
"Hockey is hard enough. Getting on the ice should be easy."
With the support of this grant, the Waseca Hockey Association can help remove financial barriers for families, ensuring more children have the opportunity to experience the sport, build skills, and create lasting memories on the ice.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Minnesota Wild Foundation through this exciting new program,” said Matt Schmidtke; Waseca Hockey Association President. “This grant opens doors for kids who may not have otherwise had the chance to play hockey, and it allows our association to continue growing the love of the game in our community.”
Families are encouraged to take advantage of upcoming opportunities to try hockey in Waseca:
Try Hockey for Free – Sunday, October 12 at 8:00 a.m. at the Waseca Community Arena
Girls Try Hockey For Free – Saturday, October 18 at 11:45 a.m. at the Waseca Community Arena.
The Waseca Hockey Association encourages families interested in registering their first-time players ages 8 and under to visit wasecahockey.org for more details. Waseca Hockey is open to all students attending Waseca, WEM, JWP and NRHEG schools.
