The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) discussed the “Explore Waseca” project at the regular city council meeting Wednesday, July 5.
Tina Wilson, Economic Development Manager and HPC board member, along with high school teacher John Hanson asked for the city council members’ support in the form of $3,000 to help start the project.
The Explore Waseca project was also previously presented to other area organizations. The county commissioners committed to provide $3,000 for each of the next five years. The tourism board consented to a one-time payment of $5,000. The Waseca School District has already committed $5,000 as well.
The project consists of a historic tour in the form of an app which allows users to download different tours providing historic information about various locations throughout Waseca. As a history teacher, Hanson explained that he and some of his students will work with the Waseca Historical Society to research and record the needed information
“We want to make the other tours as professional as possible,” Hanson said.
A number of the council members expressed support for the project: Council member Stacy Schroeder said it was a great idea for kids to connect with their history and that it could be a way to convince them to live in Waseca once they’ve become adults.
The council decided to contribute $3,000 to the project.
Other items approved at the meeting include previous meeting minutes, payroll and expenditures, a residential tax abatement, the addition of a newly appointed airport board member, Letter of Agreement (LOA) #2 with Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS), and the rescheduling of a public nuisance public hearing.
