“It may be a longshot, but we expect it.”— Coach Joan Conway

Waseca High School girls' basketball coach Joan Conway knows it's a longshot.

But she believes her squad will be up to the task of being a factor in the Big South Conference and Section 2AA in 2022-23.

"It may be a longshot, but we expect it," said Conway. "We'll need to work real hard to do that, but I feel that's a possibility if we continue to improve."

The Bluejays lost just two players from last year's team that finished 10-18 overall and 3-7 in the Big South. Defensive specialist Madi Bulfer graduated while Aliyah Taylor didn't come out for the team.

Waseca returns five letterwinners, led by all-conference selections Kloe Wadd and Sam Azure. Wadd is entering her fifth varsity season. Avery Madsen, Megan Kanewischer and Addison Wieseler also lettered last year.

Other returning varsity players include Ella Dufault, Mia Kanewischer, Callie Dufault, Ella Krautkremer, Avery Gaul and Lexi Kanewischer.

The Bluejays, according to Conway, have experience at the post position, led by Wadd.

The key to becoming the team Conway would like to see?

"Develop depth and continue to improve throughout the season," she said.

The Bluejays have a win-loss record of 185-89 in 10 seasons under Conway, who's assisted by Matt Potter, Aaron Kanewischer and Taylor Phelps. Just three seasons ago, the Jays finished 25-6.

The favorites in the Big South, according to Conway, are St. Peter and New Ulm, with LCWM the top team in the section.
