Unity Gifts closes doors

In November 2021, Beth Hanson realized a lifelong dream in the form of her consignment store, Unity Gifts. Early last month, Hanson closed the doors for the last time.

Unity Gifts was a consignment store which offered items made or upcycled by area vendors. The store was filled with unique gifts and handmade items available on only a very limited basis. At the high point, Hanson had upwards of 50 to 60 vendors selling things in Unity Gifts.

“I just wanted to give it a go and see if I could make it come true,” Hanson says, “and as we’ve gotten into it, we financially need more than just this.” So, the decision was made that Hanson could no longer keep Unity Gifts as her only source of income, and a full-time job was needed. “I had to be honest with myself that I didn’t want to juggle both,” Hanson explained, not wanting to commit to both the store and a full-time job.

Being honest with herself, Hanson realized that “It’s not what I thought the dream would be.” The concept for Unity Gifts was born back in college, when her friend’s mom had a small consignment store that Hanson just adored. While she found that store appealing, the idea was truly cemented when Hanson traveled to a football tournament and saw a fabulous boutique, then learned it, too, operated on a consignment basis. That was when Hanson decided to start a shop of her own, and Unity Gifts was born.

Starting a small business is a challenging venture. Waseca is an excellent setting for small businesses, but because there are so many, it is difficult for the community to support all of them. Hanson realized this and is just grateful to be staying in Waseca, where the community is so supportive and strong. Although she is ready to move on, Hanson thanked everyone for supporting her and the store through bittersweet tears in a farewell video posted on Facebook.
