Post 281 annual dinner, Veterans Day 2022

First Commander, membership director guests
Janesville American Legion Post 281 held its annual membership dinner Sunday, November 13. According to Post Commander Gary Mittelsteadt, it was the legion’s first in a couple of years due to Covid-19.
The evening started with a social hour at 4:30 p.m. and dinner being served by the Janesville Boy Scout Troop 89 an hour later. First District Commander Mary Hanson and First District Membership Director Dale Wellick were special guests at the dinner.
“We represent legion posts from as far west as Janesville to as far east as Wabasha,” Hanson explained. “We’ve been doing dinners like this for years. But this is the first time in a while we’ve been in Janesville.”
After the dinner, the post’s usual business announcements were shared and reports were received from other affiliates of the legion. This year, the legion acknowledged Legionville school patrol captains Ava Anderson and Ashlynn Wolff. Boy Scout Troop 89 scoutmaster Mike Daschner and American Legion Baseball coach Cory Jewison also received acknowledgement.
A new item announcement for next year is Post 281’s endeavor to start a legion softball team. JWP softball Head Coach Megan Christopher was the proposed manager of the team.
During the meeting, the legion honored deceased members William Ewert, Marvin Kollos, and Milton Herold. Also acknowledged on the Post 281 roll of honor were Mike Mulcahey, Ray Riebeling, David Barbknecht, Otto Jensen, Herbert Guse, and Franklin Miller.
Legion members who are current residents at Oak Lawn Rehabilitation Center and Generations Memory Care in Mankato were provided takeout dinners. Special thanks was given to Boy Scouts Troop 89, the American Legion baseball team, and Team Manager for serving the dinner.
