November ballot to include funding question

During the August 20 meeting, members of the Waseca school board heard from Superintendent Eric Hudspith regarding the permanent school trust fund amendment that will be on the ballot in November. Hudspith emphasized that the public is being asked to vote whether the permanent school fund, which has existed since 1858, should be amended to update how the fund distributes money to schools. He stated firmly it would in no way raise individual or property taxes for the community.
The question on the November general election ballot will be: “Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to increase the funding to all school districts from the permanent school fund, which is a fund that supports school districts without raising individual income or property taxes, effective July 1, 2027?”
In Minnesota, passing a constitutional amendment requires a yes vote from a majority of all voters casting ballots in that election. If a voter completes other elements of a ballot but skips the constitutional question, it has the same effect as voting against it. The question will be on the back side of the ballot, so voters must turn the sheet over to notice it.
During the action items, the board approved the 2026-27 student handbooks and a lease with Grace Lutheran Church for the upcoming childcare program. Also approved was Hudspith’s 2025-26 superintendent evaluation. Board chair Dave Dunn said Hudspith received “effective” and “highly effective” ratings in all areas; evaluators noted strengths of the superintendent are strategic planning and dealing with the public. The board also reported positively on the “vision card” approach and his leadership within the district. Hudspith said he appreciated all the feedback. “If you’re not always getting better, then you’re probably in the wrong profession,” he said. “I’m looking forward to another year in Waseca.”
