Janesville apple testing gets sticky

The Janesville Public Library held an apple taste test for a small group on Tuesday, Sept. 23. There were four different apple types and three different caramel dips with the children keeping track of who liked what.

Head Librarian and recently married Kelly Krienke, was wearing plastic gloves and used a commercial apple cutter and cutting board. Said Krienke, “Don’t worry, guys, I sanitized everything, so we were completely ready.” The children were ready, willing and able for the tasting. Said Aubrey Leiferman, “I like the squishy apples that you get when you’re eating an apple pie.” Evelyn Demarais, who was unable to have any caramel today said, “I like apples when they are the most juicy.” Then she whispered, “I especially don’t like it when they turn brown.” Elsie Jaeger was also there, she chimed in, “I like the juicy, not too hard and not too soft.”

There were four different apple types, Cosmic Crisp, Granny Smith, Pink Lady and Honey Crisp. There were three different caramel types, Mrs. Richardson’s Caramel dip, Litehouse low fat Caramel and Abdallah Homemade Caramel dip. First the girls wanted to rate the flavors of the caramel, since it was just Aubrey and Elsie eating the caramel, said Aubrey, “I would give Mrs. Richardson’s dip 10 out of 10, I like the Abdallah second with 9 out of 10 and Litehouse I give 1 out of 10.” Elsie said, “I too like Mrs. Richardson’s-10 out of 10, I also give Abdallah 10 out of 10 but I like Mrs. Richardson’s better. I don’t like the Litehouse and give it 0 out of 10.”

Krienke started out with Cosmic Crisp, which turned out to be the eventual favorite for all three of the girls who gave the crisps a 10 out of 10. For Granny Smith, Evelyn said, “It’s soft but hard, I give Granny Smith 0 out of 10.” Both Aubrey and Elsie gave Granny Smith 7 out of 10. Pink Lady apples earned a 10 out of 10 from both Aubrey and Elsie and a 7 out of 10 from Evelyn. Honey Crisp earned an average 9 out of 10 with Evelyn adding, “It’s goodness alone earns a 9.” Elsie then added, “Honey Crisp has the most flavor and is the most juicy.”

Somehow every apple Krienke cut got more juicy first to last, with the final apple Honey Crisp actually spraying the table and the librarian, earning a collective, “Cool” remark from the girls. But despite its “Juicy-ness” the girls still gravitated to the Cosmic Crisp brand being the best.
