A new stand at the Waseca Farmers Market on Saturday, July 19 featured three Waseca residents. John Holgren, father to Kiera and Liam, was sitting behind them, letting them run the store for a bit while he took a break.
Kiera, who is 13 years old and is going into eighth grade next year, said, “I’ve been a cheerleader for the past five years. This will be my second time going to nationals. Last year we went to Lexington, Kentucky, where we placed second out of five. We qualified this year, too, up in St. Paul. Our uniforms are a mix of purple, white and black.” Liam, 8, her little brother who is going into second grade, claimed he helped to kill the real scorpions used to decorate the keychains he was selling. He walked that statement back a moment later: “The scorpions just came inside there already, I didn’t kill them.”
Said John, “We leave tomorrow for Cleveland, Ohio.” He pointed at his daughter Kiera, “She’s in Waseca’s chapter of Champion Force Cheerleading. We tried this [booth] out to help pay for some of the cost.” On the table in front of the kids were carefully assembled pens, keychains, scorpions frozen in amber, bracelets and noisemakers. “Kiera and Liam picked these out. We ordered them in kits and spent the week assembling and getting them ready. We got here today at a quarter past seven; this will be our first time doing the farmer’s market.” The sun was shining warmly, but each of the Holgrens was nice and cool under their awning.
As Liam attempted to garner a customer’s attention, Kiera said, “We would like to do more farmers markets but it’s going to depend on our schedules. We would like to bring in more crafting items and show those off, next time. Right now, we don’t really even have a business name but we will work on it. For now we’ll call ourselves Holgren’s.”
