Community center display addressed

Hanging of veteran pictures and more things about the community center were discussed at the regular Waldorf city council the evening of Monday, June 12.
Waldorf resident Charlie Barnes asked the city council to allow the American Legion to display more veterans’ pictures in the community center. Monday’s request, which was granted, regarded an area brother and sister who were military pilots.
Other matters surrounding the community center included the potential purchase of a new furnace and having the carpets cleaned: both items were left unfinished for now.  A question which led to lengthy discussion was whether the City should provide creamer and sugar at the community center. The exchange led to an agreement that because not a lot of creamer and sugar are used, the city can provide a little. The motion to have some creamer and sugar on hand was approved.
Barnes also called attention to the veterans bench placed under the Thomas Madison post; the council members voted to have the bench fastened down.
The “Welcome to Waldorf” mural is not completed, according to Barnes, who had asked the artist to add more detail, although the artist refused. A different artist has been engaged to finish the mural with August as the expected completion time frame.
City maintenance worker Ron Fisher presented the council with information concerning numerous projects, including the trimming of tree branches in the alleyways–a task which is roughly half finished; the grading of alleyways, where more gravel is being added; and a recommendation that professionals be called in to determine why two city pumps are flowing at 45 gallons/minute rather than the expected 75 gallons/minute. Fisher said the maintenance company Quality Flow will be sending a crew to check, among other things, whether there is air trapped in the lines.
As for new business, the council approved purchasing a new router from Radio Link, allowing for better service at both city offices and the community center. The water and sewer report included information on payments: A total of about $915 remains uncollected; 20 customers’ water continues to be shut off. Water meters are scheduled to be put in and there will be a special meeting later to talk about a number of issues related to water.
The fire department’s May report and bank balances were accepted. The City’s May report and six bank balances were also approved.
Before the meeting adjourned, Barnes asked the council members to write a kind letter to the post office, asking that either a larger American flag or a smaller P.O.W. flag be posted; as a veteran, Barnes objects to the institution’s failure to follow expected flag etiquette.
The meeting ended at 8:15 p.m.
