During their Nov. 6 work session held at the high school, members of the Waseca school board heard from business teacher Sandy Schumacher who spoke about the Youth Service Learning (YSL) program. Schumacher, who has been leading YSL for eleven years, says this year’s class has 19 students. During the last period of the day the high school students travel to the elementary schools in the community to provide help wherever needed, or to the nursing home to play board games. YSL students are also expected to put in at least eight hours of volunteer time of their own choosing somewhere within the community.
The board next heard from twenty-year veteran head football coach Brad Wendland who reported on the season; the undefeated Bluejays made it to the state tournament this year. Twenty-five year veteran tennis coach Kyle Collins talked about the girls’ season followed by cross country coach of fifteen years Grant Popp reporting on both the boys’ and girls’ seasons. Girls’ soccer coach Phil Bulfer spoke next, followed by three members of the boys’ soccer team who spoke on behalf of Coach JD Delgado, who was unable to attend.
Superintendent Eric Hudspith is working with district business manager Sarah Brandt to develop a three-part community learning series titled School Finance 101. The purpose of this series is to help residents understand how public schools are funded, how district dollars are used, and how community decisions shape the educational opportunities available to students. These sessions will be open to the public and recorded and posted on the school website for those not able to attend in person.
