Aliyah Taylor to play volleyball at Bethany

Aliyah Taylor, 17, and a senior at Waseca Junior Senior High School, took a monumental step in her athletic and academic career on Wednesday, Nov. 20, as she signed her letter of intent to play volleyball for Bethany Lutheran College. With classmates, family, and coaches gathered to celebrate, Taylor’s journey from a determined fourth-grader to a collegiate athlete came full circle.
In the stands, her grandmother, Annette Rode, reflected on Aliyah’s growth: 'It’s been a fun journey supporting her. This all started in fourth grade, and she’s always taken it so seriously.' Coach Krissy Plonske, who goes by Coach Krissy, shared heartfelt words: 'This milestone isn’t just about playing at a collegiate level. It’s about her accomplishment of getting here, which speaks to her skill and determination.'
Taylor’s mother, Angie Phares, a Bethany alum and former Viking volleyball player herself, expressed her pride: “Aliyah is an exceptional student, a dedicated volleyball coach, and a talented athlete whose hard work and passion inspire others. As a Bethany Lutheran College alum, it’s incredibly special to see her continue this legacy.'"
Taylor’s decision to attend Bethany carries additional significance beyond her athletic career. As a standout student, she is entering college with 53 earned credits through Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO), positioning her to complete her degree in business management, with a minor in business administration, ahead of schedule.
Her father, Jared Taylor, beamed with pride at the ceremony, saying, “As a father, I couldn’t be prouder in every aspect of her life. Today highlights one of her many accomplishments and paints the picture of how many more are to come.”
In addition to excelling academically and athletically, Taylor serves as a volleyball coach, inspiring younger athletes with her leadership and passion for the game. Outside of volleyball, she finds time for unique hobbies including hunting coyotes and deer. Though she wasn’t able to bag a buck this year, she shared, “I saw one for just a moment but couldn’t get it.”
Taylor’s signing ceremony was more than a celebration of her athletic talent—it was a testament to her hard work, perseverance, and the strong support system around her. As classmates filtered back to class, Taylor remained to thank friends and family, pose for pictures, and reflect on her journey.
“Don’t let anybody tear you down, no matter what,” she said, offering advice to her peers. “If you work hard, you can accomplish anything.”
With a legacy rooted in Bethany Lutheran College—where her mother not only played volleyball but now serves as the director of career development—Taylor looks forward to continuing her journey as a Viking. Her college years will see her balancing academics, athletics, and her part-time job at Starbucks, which she’ll transfer to Bethany’s new Madison Avenue location when it opens.
Taylor’s grandmother, Annette Rode, summed up the day’s emotions perfectly: “That’s probably what made her so tough—growing up with her brothers. It’s been a joy to watch her grow into the incredible person she is today.”
As the ceremony wrapped up, Aliyah took a moment to look ahead. With her journey as a Viking about to begin, she said, “I’m excited to start this new chapter and make the most of my time at Bethany.”
